Over $1.4B secured in patent licensing deals—expert in SEP and semiconductor licensing.
Mr. Virmani has secured more than $1.4 billion in patent licensing revenue within the semiconductor and SEP industries. He began his career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office before joining the U.S. International Trade Commission’s Office of Unfair Import Investigations. After almost seven years of working in the public sector, Mr. Virmani joined McDermott Will & Emery in 2003, an Am Law 100 firm. Throughout the last two decades, he progressed from developing licensing programs for a major tech-backed IP startup, to leading nine-figure negotiations at publicly traded companies, including companies involved in driving semiconductor innovation advancing the development of wireless and video SEPs. He also serves on the boards of Neo Wireless, a licensor of cellular SEPs, and OP Solutions, a developer and licensor of VVC patents. Finally, Mr. Virmani teaches Patent Licensing & Strategy as an adjunct professor at Villanova Law School.

In more than 30 years advising on SEP disputes as outside counsel, I have been fortunate to work alongside Shival on various projects. He is a highly experienced licensing executive who is able to distil dense technical, legal and commercial details into decisive strategy. He anticipates arguments with impactful counter-arguments and combines that with a thorough attention to the groundwork. That blend of rigor and relentlessness makes him a formidable negotiator—one who reliably turns SEP portfolios into signed agreements.
Shival dives into every facet of a licensing program—technology, financials, market dynamics, litigation, and strategy. Hands-on and collaborative, he understands the teamwork needed for a winning campaign. His readiness to tackle what others overlook—and his tireless work ethic—consistently delivers impressive results.
As outside counsel, I’ve collaborated with many licensing executives and companies, and few match Shival’s command of the negotiating table. For more than a decade, his rigorous preparation, integrity, and tenacity have consistently converted complex semiconductor and SEP portfolios into high-value licensing agreements.
Shival combines a clear understanding of the technical and legal aspects of SEP licensing with a practical, commercial approach. He has a talent for simplifying complex issues and guiding negotiations towards solutions that work in practice as well as in principle.
